A Very Productive Week

We had a great week here with the addition. Windows and a back door went in and several walls came out. We've also lost access to our bathroom, so we're down to one tub...upstairs.

Here's the exterior early in the week:

On the inside, the exterior kitchen and master bathroom walls came out, and support beams went in to hold up the house. A last-minute change led to the bathroom beam being nested in the ceiling instead of hanging down. Our awesome architect brought over a structural engineer to confirm our change wouldn't affect the structural integrity adversely. 20 minutes later, we had a new plan! Nesting the beam in the ceiling will really open up the new shower in the bathroom.

Here's the exterior kitchen wall with the outer layer already removed. You can see the spray foam here we added when we renovated the kitchen in 2012. Too bad we had to lose all that nice insulation.

And from inside the house, this is the view. Needless to say, tonight's thunderstorm was loud!

From a frame to a structure with a roof!

There's been great progress here on our addition over the last week.

The roof was framed early in the week and the shingles were on by Thursday. There will be four arched windows on this wall but the openings are still covered up. We should get to see windows go in within the week!

The outer wood walls were removed on Friday, exposing the insulation in the kitchen and bathtub in the bathroom.

Also on the schedule for this week is removing this wall, which has the kitchen on the other side of it. Since our laundry room is right below the kitchen, we're trying to figure out a way to fit in a laundry shoot!

From foundation to floor and framing!

Over the past week and a half, the foundation was finished, the floor joists were installed, along with the subfloor, and the framing for the outer walls started to go in. Here's a few shots of the work through today.

This is the shower from the other angle. The boarded up window is our current bathroom's former window.

This is the view standing in the new nook looking down into the mud room. The opening will be the new back door.

This is what it all looks like from the yard. There will be four arched windows to the left of the door, eventually.

This is all exciting progress. A roof should be on before too long too!

Progress on the foundation

Here's the progress in the last week. After they dug out all the dirt, they assembled the concrete forms and poured the foundation footings. This happened while we were in NYC.

They then built another set of forms on top of the footings and poured more concrete for the foundation walls.

And here's how it's looked since about last Tuesday evening.

The foundation still needs some pea gravel for the upper part (left side of picture) and a slab for the lower part (right side). Then, some back fill dirt and the foundation is done! Hopefully all that can happen this week!

What a mess!

I'm hoping this is the messiest stage of this project...

The foundation was dug today, after two weeks of no work, and I would have better pictures, except that they are still out there, I leave town tomorrow, my laptop has to get mailed back to Mass. to get re-imaged, and I wanted to share pictures tonight.

First the fence came down...

Then the heavy equipment moved in...

And they dug and dug and dug...

And our Japanese spurge and patio pavers got crushed in the process. Though Travis promised to fix them, my heart breaks a little thinking about all the work we went to laying them ourselves.

Two Weeks In...

...demo is almost done, and hopefully the foundation work can start soon.

Demo included salvaging half of the original brick to use on the addition to blend it with new brick. This is only part of the salvaged brick.

We're hoping for some dry weather so we can pick up the pace!

Our 2016 Addition...

...comes in the form of additional square footage!

After months of planning, all the details and paperwork, including a variance with the county, are in place for us to start our addition.

It's a little tough to tell from the side views where the addition is if you're not familiar with the house, but the walls with arched windows will be new.
